Ick, FrontPage!

As the First Marking period ended, so did our work in the "HTML" section of my Web Design class in school. After finishing HTML Project 8 on Friday, I got a rare "free" day in Web Design to surf the internet. Mrs. Henry, the teacher claims what we did the "difficult" section of the class first (hand-coding web pages in Notepad), then we will end up with the "easy" coursework, FrontPage. Well, on Monday, we started our work in FrontPage 2003. Aside from a preconceived perceptions of the program, I basically know nothing about it, other than it's lack of ability to create very standards-based pages.

As soon as we opened the program, I knew I'd not enjoy the next 40-some days of class. FrontPage 2003 itself has that same gradient-laden GUI as the rest of the Office 2003 Suite, which IMHO is ugly in itself, but that's a totally different story.

The rest of the GUI looks like it had been thrown together, there are seemly random buttons everywhere for who knows what. What we are going to work in, design view, is basically a WYSIWYG editor, which seems way too noobish for most "normal" users. Then there is opening ans saving pages. The teacher mentioned that that is the most difficult of the program. But it is just too bad. For example, little things like each time you open the Open dialog box, it defaults to My Network Places, as opposed to My Documents or the last opened folder. There are countless more little annoyances in the program that make it just hard to use.

Another major thing is that if you'll examine the code that FrontPage spits out, there is no DOCTYPE Declaration.

For one thing, I enjoy hand-coding web pages in Notepad tons better than I like using FrontPage and having it create crap HTML for me.

Oh well.

In other news, this weekend, for the second consecutive year, we have won the Cavalcade of Bands Yankee Open Championships. In my four years in marching band, we have been the champions three times. That's a pretty good record, methinks. :D

My parents have just purchased me a 2003 Dodge Neon, my first car. I'll post more information and photos later (hopefully over the weekend)...

WeatherSTAR 4000 Emulator Updated

Finally, a new version of the WeatherSTAR Emulator has been released. After, literally months of waiting, and numerous delays, Bill and the beta team have gotten together a once again working version of the emulator. The previous version has been broken since at least May due to a bug that caused the program to crash every time local data tried to be validated, making it impossible to set up a config file from scratch.

Here's a screenshot of the Regional Observations page, showing my new regional map, which is nearly spot on accurate to how my 4000 was set up prior to 2004.
